Our Inception and Mission
Founded in 1985, Reporters Without Borders (RSF) has established itself as a leading non-governmental organization focused on defending and promoting freedom of information worldwide. As an entity with consultative status across multiple international bodies, including the United Nations and UNESCO, we leverage our extensive network of correspondents and bureaux globally to advocate for free and factual information. Our multilingual press releases and reports serve as a barometer for the state of media freedom and bring violations into the public eye to spur action among global leaders.
The Call for Accountability
In light of the surge in "Fake News", we have initiated the Journalism Trust Initiative (JTI), signaling the pressing need for a constructive self-reflection within the media landscape. The JTI instigates a critical discourse on the accountability of the Fourth Estate, emphasizing the dual nature of freedom and responsibility inherent to reputable journalism. Our role as an impartial convener offers a unique platform for this crucial exchange, avoiding the pitfalls of potential external regulatory imposition.
Funding and Support
Launching the JTI was made possible through the support of diverse organizations and philanthropic efforts. A notable contribution comes from Craig Newmark Philanthropies, founded by the creator of craigslist, underscoring our mission to pave the way for credible journalism.
Our Collaborative Framework and Facilitators
The initiative's progress is bolstered by key partnerships with the Global Editors Network, European Broadcasting Union, and Agence France-Presse, among others. Collectively, they present a formidable coalition to reinforce the tenets of credible and ethical journalism at a scale that is both pervasive and inclusive.
Stakeholders and Standard Development
With an assembly of drafting committees and an advisory technical task-force, JTI's stakeholders are exclusive industry professionals, representing a spectrum of media organizations. Their collective aim is to create a benchmark for trusted news by establishing industry-driven standards, a reflection of our committed stance against misinformation.
The Global Response to Our Initiative
Despite facing criticism from some international figures, the JTI stands resolute in propagating the virtues of dependable journalism. The global reception to our public consultations attests to the pressing need, and overwhelming desire, for a journalistic practice underpinned by trust and integrity.
Travel and Information: A Synergistic Approach
The strengthening of trust in journalism transcends the media sector alone—it has a profound impact on every aspect of modern life, including travel. Providing reliable information is crucial, especially for travelers seeking authentic experiences and navigating new destinations. As trust in media increases, travelers can make informed decisions, from choosing destinations to selecting accommodations. Our work indirectly enhances the travel experience by advocating for the dissemination of accurate information, thus benefiting the tourism industry and travelers around the globe.
